However, it is greatly impacted by our lifestyle and diet. In Western medicine, vision-related services are a multimillion-dollar business and growing annually, along with an increased need for laser vision corrections, glaucoma and cataract surgeries and macular degeneration care, to name but a few. Moxibustion is effective for adult disease & chronic fatigue

2012.07.26 / Chung cheong Today   < Moxa treatment is effective for adult disease and chronic fatigue>   Researchers from Deajeon Korean Medicine Hospital of Deajeon University have accomplished a first... preventing blood oxygenator. The theory moxibustion that is one of the big three means of treatment (moxibustion, acupuncture, cupping therapy) is effective against chronic fatigue and adult disease has been proved a first.   Professor Son Chan Kyu's team , Research Center for Internal Immunization at Dajeon Korean Medicine Hospital of Deajeon University , substantiates moxibustion has an outstanding medical benefit to improvement of idiopathic chronic fatigue based on the test results of 45 patients with idiopathic chronic fatigue for 4 weeks. Idiopathic chronic fatigue means fatigue that lasts more than 6 months without medical evidence. Research team divided patients into two groups and applied genuine moxibustion and quack moxibustion triweekly on hypogastric and navel. Then they compared and measured change amount of active oxygen· glutathione's activity.   The results of this research shows that the amount of MDA in the blood by active oxygen reduced 20 % at the patients series that applied real moxa treatment compared with patients who got quack moxibustion.   In particular, markers related oxidation stress and anti-oxidation which are known as the reason of fatigue are got better in a blood test. Activity of glutathione actually does antioxidative activity increased 8.1㎛/L in patient series where apply real moxa cautery but in patient series where getting fake moxa treatment decreased by 11.2㎛/L.   The greatest reward of this research was the proof that moxibustion has an positive effects on the aging process, immunity fluctuation, fatigue recovery, cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes.   Professor Son Chang Kyu explained, " It has been proved that moxa treatment reduces fatigue by preventing the oxidation process in blood. Kristi Ribeiro said just weeks after giving birth to her son, Colton, he began screaming in pain. Doctors discovered Colton was suffering from mitochondrial disease. “Mitochondrial disease is probably the most common disease you’ve never heard of before,” said Dr. Richard Boles, who treats Colton. He added, “(The disease) is due to defects in energy metabolism. The mitochondrial…when they don’t have enough energy, you have a wide variety of different problems that could occur.”   For Colton, the disease has left him with gastrointestinal issues, including an enlarged liver “He was having constant stomach pains and was waking up in pain, going to bed in pain, several times a day lying in bed, saying his stomach hurt. His doctor suggested we try acupuncture,” said Kristi. For small children, the acupuncture needle is a small, almost miniature needle. Colton calls it a “sticker,” and they’re left on for two days for maximum impact. “They’re really great. He doesn’t really feel them. Instead of just having points for abdominal pain, we have points that are really specific for Colton,” said Monika Kobylecka, an acupuncture therapist at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.   The results of the treatment were almost immediate. “By the second treatment, the complaining of the stomach pain had stopped,” said Kristi. Colton is one of dozens receiving acupuncture at the hospital’s Pain Management Clinic. “Acupuncture has helped him with his constipation, it has decreased his pain and he’s come off the medications,” said Jeffrey Gold. “It helps me feel better that we’re not giving him a bunch of medication,” said Kristi. “It’s been amazing. How integrative medicine can help your health   By Sally Wadyka, RealSimple.comMay 19, 2010- Updated 1217 GMT (2017 HKT)   Integrative medicine teaches lifestyle changes to keep patients healthy.STORY HIGHLIGHTS An integrative doctor uses Western approaches and then complements them with other treatments Many mainstream doctors are already adopting some I.M. practices Mind-body therapies, such as meditation, relaxation techniques, and yoga, show promise In many cases complementary treatments are not currently covered by insurance   There are countless opinions regarding how to improve health care in the United States, but many experts agree on one fact: "Our current health-care system is mainly a sick-care system," says Adam Perlman, executive director of the Institute for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.   In the past, Western medical schools did not emphasize teaching lifestyle changes to keep patients healthy; instead they focused on treating patients once they were ill. "The old thinking was, You're broken-- now we'll fix you," says Kevin Barrows, clinical director of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of California School of Medicine, San Francisco. But things are changing.     < What is integrative medicine (I.M.)? >   This practice combines conventional Western medicine with nontraditional practices--including acupuncture, herbal treatments, massage, mind-body approaches, nutrition, and stress management--to keep patients in good health. And though its advocates are growing (according to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, 42.8 percent of women, 33.5 percent of men, and nearly 12 percent of children under the age of 18 had used some kind of complementary and alternative medicine), integrative medicine by no means abandons its conventional counterpart."Western medicine has many strengths and has made incredible advances," says Victoria Maizes, executive director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, in Tucson, and a family- and integrative-medicine specia1ist. "People used to die of infections, and now we have antibiotics. They used to die of heart disease, and now we have bypass surgery." An integrative doctor--whether a primary-care physician, an ob-gyn, or an oncologist--enlists Western approaches when appropriate and then complements them with other treatments. An I.M. doctor won't go as far as taking a picture of your aura, but don't be surprised if she supplements your medical prescription with one for a daily walk around the neighborhood. Similarly, a cancer patient receiving chemotherapy might also be getting acupuncture, doing yoga, and practicing meditation for stress reduction.A few important distinctions: An I.M. doctor is not the same as an osteopathic or naturopathic doctor, although all three share similarities. A doctor of osteopathic medicine (or D.O.) gets conventional medical training but with additional instruction on the structure of the body in relation to how it functions; treatment protocol may involve physical manipulation of your body with his hands to diagnose injury or illness and help the body function efficiently. A naturopathic doctor (or N.D.) gets Western-style medical training but also learns about botanicals, nutrition, and Eastern therapies. "It's a bit of 'buyer, beware' for this specialty," says Tracy Gaudet, executive director of Duke Integrative Medicine, in Durham, North Carolina. "There are quality, accredited programs for naturopathic medicine, but people can also get an online degree and call themselves an N.D. with very little education."     < What can I expect from a visit with an I.M. doctor? >   The first thing you'll notice is how long you're in the office--not in the waiting room reading magazines but actually meeting with your physician. "I spend an hour and a half with a new patient," says Maizes. After discussing your medical history, diet, and what medications and supplements you're taking, an I.M. doctor also throws out some lifestyle-related questions. For example, Barrows asks whether patients were raised in a particular religious tradition to determine "whether they have a source of strength and inspiration they turn to in challenging times." He also discusses how connected they are to family, friends, and their community and asks about hobbies. "We place a great deal of emphasis on enhancing the quality of interaction between patient and practitioner," says Barrows. "And that in itself is therapeutic." Depending on the type of integrative physician you're seeing, you'll get many of the same tests that a traditional doctor performs, including a cholesterol screening, a Pap smear, a physical exam, and blood work. The main difference is what the doctor "prescribes" for a chronic condition or for maintaining health."We spend a lot of time trying to figure out the underlying causes," says Tanya Edwards, medical director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute. Instead of giving a patient who comes in complaining of fatigue, insomnia, constipation, and headache prescriptions to treat each symptom, an I.M. doctor might recognize that the patient has signs of a magnesium deficiency and then prescribe a supplement. The I.M. approach also includes ongoing support for incorporating changes into your life. Many doctors are available by e-mail. And Duke Integrative Medicine is launching professional training in integrative-health coaching. "It's like a life coach, but for your health," says Gaudet.   < What complementary treatments can I expect my I.M. doctor to suggest? >   Nutritional counseling and physical activity are two often employed--and powerful--tools. Indeed, the largest diabetes-prevention trial, completed in 2001, found that lifestyle intervention, including diet, exercise, and behavior modification, reduced by nearly 60 percent the chances of developing type 2 diabetes in those at high risk. In comparison, drug therapy (with Metformin) produced only a 31 percent reduction. Acupuncture is also widely used for a variety of conditions, including nausea (from chemotherapy or pregnancy), infertility, fibromyalgia pain, arthritis, PMS, and menopausal symptoms. It has the backing of many randomized, controlled trials, and "the National Institutes of Health concluded that there is promising evidence for using acupuncture in specific conditions," says Gaudet. Herbal medicines, a counterpart to acupuncture in Chinese medicine, have less scientific backing but much practical evidence. (Note: Because herbs are so effective, don't self-prescribe them. "You need to be guided by a doctor who is well trained in integrative medicine," warns Gaudet. Otherwise you risk bad drug interactions, and serious medical complications can arise.) Mind-body therapies, such as meditation, relaxation techniques, yoga, and hypnosis, also show promise. "There have been studies on meditation that show, regardless of condition, many people get a reduction in anxiety and depression from it," says Barrows. Support for the efficacy of hypnosis is growing, too. "There is evidence that using it before surgery can decrease the need for more anesthesia," says Gaudet.   < How can I get an I.M.-like experience with my current doctor? >   Many mainstream doctors are already adopting some I.M. practices, particularly the ones that have hard science backing them. "It's not that we're not open to I.M.," says Jacques Saunders, a family physician outside of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. "It's just that traditional doctors were trained in a more cautious atmosphere. Western therapies are more widely studied." To integrate some integrative medicine into your own life, "be your own advocate," says Roberta Lee, vice chair of the department of integrative medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center, in New York City. First educate yourself by reading up. Lee recommends Eight Weeks to Optimum Health, by Andrew Weil, a top integrative doctor in the United States, and doing research on credible websites (such as nccam.nih.gov, the site of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine). Then, talk to your doctor. If you have back pain, ask her if she thinks acupuncture might help. Chances are, if you have a doctor you love, she is someone who listens to you, is open-minded, and doesn't automatically rule out complementary treatments. "Give her the opportunity to research with you and be involved," says Lee.   < Does I.M. cost more? >   It's true that in many cases complementary treatments are not at present covered by insurance. But if you see an integrative doctor who is also a primary-care physician, office visits and medical testing may be covered, and other therapies may fall under your insurance. "Don't just assume it's not covered," says Maizes. "There's tremendous variation by state and insurance company, so it's worth checking." And even treatments that aren't covered may qualify for reimbursement under the rules of your company's limited health-care flexible-spending account.   < So is I.M. the future of medicine? >   Integrative doctors hope so. In fact, they hope to lose the "integrative medicine" label altogether. As more doctors emerge from medical-school programs that incorporate integrative training, and existing doctors learn from patients and research, Maizes says, "I think I.M. will lose its separateness and just become the medicine we practice." When you walk into many high-tech fertility clinics or cancer centers and see brochures for acupuncturists, massage therapists, and yoga teachers, that's a sign of just how close this is to reality. It's great for pain, repetitive strains, inflammation, toxicity, digestive problems, and many other issues."   Daphane Stidham reflects on the technique stating, "This is an excellent alternative for those who are relying on over-the-counter medication in order to relieve pain. It is natural, healthy, and is proven to be effective. Whenever possible, it is always best to search for a holistic approach to a physical ailment. These methods are much better for the human body in the long run."   There are several types of cupping, including "wet" cupping. Using this strategy, a practitioner lightly pricks the skin with a needle and then places the cup on the skin. Blood gets released into the cup, thus relieving pressure. Some smaller orbs are even safe for use on the face. The side effects of the treatment are almost non-existent, except for slight red marks that last for a few hours after the session is complete. Morton explains, "There is no trauma, no broken capillaries. It's from the toxins that come to the surface. Daily Herald By Patrick Massey Article posted: 5/27/2013     Integrative medicine making inroads   It seems that the world is moving faster every year and change has become the new constant. This is especially evident in the area of nontraditional medicine. During the past 30 years, nontraditional medicine has transformed from a health care approach primarily done by those on the fringe to almost mainstream medicine. This change is most apparent in the Program for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona — the brainchild of Dr. Andrew Weil.   Before 2000 most references to nontraditional medicine were called alternative. The term "complementary" was introduced since these nontraditional therapies were complementary to what was being done in traditional Western medicine. Recently the term "integrative medicine" has become the working definition for combining traditional and nontraditional medicine. In 2014, integrative medicine will be a board certified subspecialty.   In 2000, I was a member of the inaugural class for the Program for Integrative Medicine. None of us actually knew much about the program because no one had done this before. However, we were all dedicated to meaningful improvements in how we practiced our craft.   After two years, we graduated with a greater understanding of holistic medicine and the conviction that the traditional medical system needed to change and would change. Since that time, the program has grown into an international phenomenon.   As an example of how much the program has grown, in 2002, the date of my graduation from the program, there were about 20 physicians, three in Illinois, who had completed the program.   In 2012, the Program in Integrative Medicine boasts almost 900 graduates, 37 Illinois and 64 from foreign countries. California has the most graduates with 122.   This program now offers opportunities for medical students, interns and residents to learn about nontraditional medicine. Through the program, more than 32 family practice medicine programs in the U.S. and Canada, including the St. Joseph family practice residency in Chicago, are offering physician training in integrative medicine. In a few days, five pediatric residency programs will offer extensive training in integrative medicine. The goals with this type of training are to educate and truly integrate effective nontraditional therapies into everyday medicine.   The U.S. population has been enthusiastically using nontraditional therapies for decades. It's good to see that traditional medicine is finally catching up.   An increasing number of corporations are realizing the health benefits to their employees by actively preventing disease and illness rather than simply early diagnosis. Corporations such as IBM, Cisco, Ford, Pepsi, Pfizer, NASA and others are looking to integrative medicine to reduce medical costs, improve employee health and productivity.   This update on the Program for Integrative Medicine is not meant to be an advertisement. BBC NEWS  Monday, 25 January, 1999, 10:04 GMT   When East meets West  The exhibition examines the meeting of medical minds Eastern medicines are becoming more popular in the West, but few people realise how the various cultures have exchanged ideas. Now an exhibition at the Science Museum in London explores how they have interacted on medicine through the centuries. Called East Meets West: Medical Ideas on the Move, it looks at examples of how ideas and technologies have moved from one side of the world to another. It opens on Thursday and is based on an exhibition presented by the Wellcome Trust. Neil Fazakerley is curator of the exhibition. He said: "It's attractive because it's taking a medical history story but from a slightly different angle, showing how the different cultures have interacted. "It's obvious that Eastern medical practices are becoming more popular in the West but maybe people don't know that ideas have been exchanged for thousands of years and that Western medicine did not grow up in isolation."   The exhibition details four main areas: Ancient Greek and Islamic medical ideas, and how they were reborn into Western culture. The exhibition starts in the ninth and tenth centuries when Baghdad was the centre of Islamic science and its highly sophisticated medical system. Through the translation work of Persian scholars, ancient Greek medical thought was brought into the Islamic medical system. It was when Westerners started charging into the East on crusades during the twelfth century that European scholars became increasingly interested in Islamic medicine. Arabic material was translated into Latin, the European scholars' language of the time, thus preserving the Greek tradition that may otherwise have been lost.   Co-existence of Islamic and Indian traditions and the development of Western medicine in colonial India The traditional Indian medical system - known as ayurveda or "the knowledge of life" - has existed in some form for more than 2000 years. "Man of the medical caste, physician" (Wellcome Institute Library) During foreign invasions from the eleventh century onwards the Islamic system of medicine was brought to India. The Indian name for Islamic medicine, "unani" refers originally to the Greeks. The two systems complemented each other well and both ayurveda and unani flourish today in India. European colonists from the sixteenth century onwards, gained knowledge of plants, diseases and surgical techniques that were unknown in the West. One such example is rauwolfia serpentia, a plant used in traditional Indian medicine. The active ingredient is today used to treat hypertension and anxiety in the West. The flow of ideas turned with the growth of the British Empire in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as many Western-style hospitals and medical colleges were established in India   How the West has adopted ideas from the Far East and vice versa Interaction began in the seventeenth century, when Christian missionaries sent home descriptions of the medicines and techniques they saw there. Europeans became aware of the Chinese practices of feeling the pulse, acupuncture and moxibustion. Moxibustion counters irritation and heals small wounds by placing on the skin and igniting a cone or cylinder of moxa, a tuft of soft combustible substance. Western medicine gained a foothold in the Far East in the nineteenth century. Western-style hospitals and medical schools were set up and foreign medical textbooks were translated of into Chinese. Today Chinese medicine is becoming increasingly popular in the West. Acupuncture is probably the best known technique and is used to treat a wide variety of complaints. However, studies suggest that moxibustion is successfully applied to conditions such as schizophrenia, back pain, arthritis, cancer and skin diseases.  A vaccination scene from 1807, by L. L. Smallpox inoculation has long been used by physicians in Asia and Africa by deliberately attempting to give people a mild smallpox infection. One of the ways they did this for children was to make them wear the underwear of an infected child. The technique became known in Europe in the eighteenth century this technique and was practised for a while on the British aristocracy. The European medical establishment accepted the practice after Dr Edward Jenner developed a safer technique of vaccination in 1798. This used the less dangerous cowpox rather than smallpox. Vaccination, using Dr Jenner's method, then returned East, and was used in India and China by the beginning of the nineteenth century.
